Evolution and devolution. The powerful and the powerless— Through this painting, I wanted to reverse the usual role of the monkey, who would normally be dominant in nature, and instead depict a world where it is ruled by mushrooms. The countless eyes I added at the end were meant to emphasize that this monkey is no longer a “living being.” What defines life? Is there any standard for the size or value of a life? I created this piece hoping to evoke that strange, unsettling feeling.

進化と退化、支配するものとされるもの——。この絵を通して、本来自然界において優位に立つはずの猿の立場を反転させ、きのこたちに支配されていく世界を描きたかった。最後に加えた無数の眼たち。この猿が“生身の存在”ではないことを強調したくって。何が生命なのか、命の大小にはどこか基準なのか。そんな不思議な感覚を持ってもらいたくって描いた作品。
